Small College. Big Discovery.

Westminster College

Redefining Curiosity

In 2019, a curious group of Westminster College field researchers exploring the Grand River National Grassland in South Dakota received a startling phone call. A rancher who was repairing a fence found a curious object jutting out of the ground.

What they found is proof that at our small college, we make BIG discoveries.

Vi Lowe

Unleashing Potential

Vi Lowe is a 2023 graduate of Fulton High School who attended the 2023 Dinosaur Dig as a guest of Westminster College, with firm plans to attend a larger university in the fall. Lowe quickly fell in love with the hands-on nature of Westminster's environmental science major and the one-on-one interaction with faculty members and others — signature characteristics of the College's educational style — which completely altered the 19-year-old's future trajectory:

"My experience with Shady helped guide my decision to attend Westminster because I realized that there is no other school that would provide me with these opportunities and the hands-on mentorship that I'm receiving. If I were to attend a bigger school as originally planned, there would be heavy competition for the experiences and resources that are so easy to access at Westminster."

Prehistoric Mystery

Was Shady Murdered? Digging Into the Truth

Westminster researchers made significant progress in learning about the circumstances of Shady's death … or at least the Triceratops' fate immediately following its demise, prior to being buried deep in the earth of South Dakota for millions of years. Punctures and grooves that resemble bite marks indicate carnivores may have feasted on Shady's carcass. Teeth belonging to theropods such as the Tyrannosaurus rex, smaller raptors, and crocodiles were found throughout the dig site.

And Shady's bones were pulled apart.

Transforming Minds

Student 1

"I decided after attending community college online to transfer to Westminster College once I became involved with the paleontology work taking place on campus and in South Dakota. I was able to volunteer in the prep lab for over a year, even before officially becoming a student, which allowed me to grow skills I never thought I'd acquire before graduate school. Upon starting at Westminster this fall, I knew that this college had the potential to give me a head start in my chosen career field of paleontology and museum studies, through avenues like high-level undergraduate research. I've discovered so many opportunities to develop and grow that I never possible!"

"Working with Shady was a turning point in my academic journey, shaping my future career in geological sciences. I started at Westminster as an undecided student, but my experience with Shady solidified my passion for geology. This small undergraduate college offers opportunities for hands-on research that larger universities often reserve for graduate students. Shady is a remarkable piece of earth's history that helps us uncover its secrets, one bone at a time."

Madison Scott, Class of 2025, Environmental Science Major
Student 3

"Getting to unearth and touch an animal that is millions of years old was such an awe moment for me. It really makes you think about our own time here on earth and about how, in the grand scheme of things, 80 years here, for example, is really only a tiny blip in time. Dr. David Schmidt is such an instrumental part in my experiences."

Making Headlines

In 2020, Shady’s discovery by Westminster researchers generated more than 300 headlines throughout the nation, elevating Shady the Dinosaur from campus fame to national acclaim. The CBS Evening News, Smithsonian Magazine, USA Today, and the Associated Press were just a few to carry the story about the small college that made a BIG discovery.

Transforming Futures

Inspiring Boldness

Westminster's summer Geoscience Field Course in the Badlands of South Dakota, where Shady was unearthed between 2020 and 2024, is just one example of the hands-on, experiential learning that takes place at the small college — both inside and outside of the classroom.

Founded in 1851 and home of Winston Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech, Westminster College is ranked prestigiously by The Princeton Review as one of the "Best 150 colleges in the Midwest" for 2024. New graduates experience a more than 90% placement rate within six months of graduation, while Westminster alumni are in the top 16% nationwide for graduate earnings. The only National Liberal Arts college in Missouri, Westminster has long been recognized for its focus on educating and inspiring students to make an impact on the world around them.
