Allysha Martin (she/her/hers), Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. Joining Westminster in 2021, she brings her previous experience from having taught Spanish at the university level since 2008 and teaches all levels of Spanish. She also advises the Spanish Club and enjoys mentoring her students and organizing off-campus activities with them. In the classroom, students can expect active and communicative language learning that encourages the student to engage at an intrinsic motivational level. Students will gain proficiency not only in language, but in cultural acumen, use of technology, and a better understanding of oneself in the world. Dr. Martin earned her Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, her M.A. at Middlebury College, and her B.A. at Union University. Her research focuses on consumption in late 20th-century women’s narrative in Latin America. Her work has been published in the LL Journal and, most recently, her research on social media in the second language classroom was published in the Foreign Language Annals. She has presented her research at various national and regional conventions including most recently at the Modern Language Association (2021), American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (2018, 2016), Asociación Internacional de Literatura y Cultura Femenina Hispánica (2015), and Latin American Studies Association (2014). Currently, Dr. Martin lives in Columbia with her husband and pets. She spends time reading, gardening, doing art projects, and meditating, all of which are usually accompanied by listening to music or podcasts. Having grown up in Puerto Rico and lived abroad in Mexico and Spain, travel is still an important part of her life and she has made it to almost all continents (Australia, Africa, and Antarctica are the exceptions…for now).
